subway singer

Waiting for the train I listened to a man with many gums and few teeth pour out a haunting rendition of Knockin' On Heaven's Door. (This song is apparently a brooklyn favorite as I have heard it sung by many subway singers over the years) The train came and he joined my car, standing with a pug sized amplifier precariously wrapped around his body. His microphone was duct tape-strapped to a neck rack (the kind you see harmonica players use), and his puffed black coat swallowed him up pronouncing the guitar, hero of his story. He began to play tracy chapman's  baby can i hold you tonight, and moved a drunken man with swollen finger tips to applause and tears. I filled his hat with the change from my tips and watched him leave the car.

illusions

This is my fledgling video. It is still in the works. It is a visual representation for the piece i wrote, Illusion. The music at the end was written by me and m.l. before we were One Another. It is a clip from a song called Wall. I'll post the finished video hopefully in the next month or so.

life or theater?

Lynda Barry

I met Lynda Barry today. She told me that drawing is what keeps us alive, and that it keeps us from killing other people.

The drawing above was inspired by Charlotte Salomon, you can see the original image here. http://www.jmberlin.de/charlottesalomon/en/vorspiel.html

yes, yes, yes, totally meaningless Or mimetic is not a feeling part 2.

As a supplement to this drawing I would like to offer the following formulas:

mimicry = love?
love + mimicry = love

aura? ritual.

I've been thinking about Benjamin's take on "aura"in art, the elements particular to a piece of art.  Benjamin would argue that this virtual space, the blog, removes the aura present in the drawing's original form. The back and forth exchange between the observer and the work is mediated causing a break with the aura. Aligning myself with Benjamin makes me a luddite, I think. But I agree that mediation through film, photography, and the internet does change the structure of perception.
So I will hold tight to my exchange rituals. While attending a zine workshop last night, I exchanged drawings for two zines, all auras intact and smiled on Walter Benjamin.

Knitting as a Lesbian process

This one is for E. who started teaching me how to knit last night. I find that the process of knitting is much like the process of relearning how to draw hands. The best strategy is to let it all hang out, mistakes and all. So my scarf has some holes, and my hands are out of proportion, but its all about the process.! Thank god for lesbian herstory.

i love this guy (Townes Van Zandt) and kind of think this song is  appropriate for knitting in the winter with friends. x.o.

Lucky the water boooofalo.

I heard C has a disdain for paper, so I painted this one on a c.d. cover. Lucky the "Booofalo" goes to La Catedrale et les Alpes. I recommend listening to "Lucky" by Kicking Giant while viewing.

Oldies

This is one of the books I made over the summer. I gave it to leith and suzy in exchange for dreamy accommodations by the sea. As my friend M. later told me, the owl stands for wisdom in dark times. I accepted that idea over the Owl = death. This is an animal I've often associated with my mom. She has since developed a collection of various owl trinkets. I've been trying to add new drawings daily, but I've been distracted by the mini movies I'm working on. So in the meantime I'll be posting some oldies. Chloe, you have not been forgotten! I'll post the new drawings soon.

spirits momentum

I drew this in Maine circa 2006. The character on the top right is my understanding of Leith, Ronnie is in the middle, and the lower left hand is a self portrait. This is how I imagined us at the dance parties that we used to go to on the island where we lived and worked at the time. This must have been drawn before the summer tourist rush, when there was still time to be possessed by the salt air. Upon my return to Maine this year, I found that Ronnie had it displayed among his menagerie.

Bromley's Muses, A scrambled narrative

This piece was imagined at the old Bromley Music Studio. The place is haunted. I used song #5 from Musical Saw Songs "S" by Hajime Sakita for the soundtrack.
